Eagles vs Buccaneers Live Updates | September 29, 2024

The Eagles were in Tampa Bay to face the Buccaneers in a rematch of last year’s Wild Card round.

The Buccaneers took control early and despite a hard-fought comeback effort against the Eagles, Tampa Bay was just too much, defeating the Birds 33-16.

With AJ Brown (hamstring injury), DeVonta Smith (concussion) and Lane Johnson (concussion) out due to injuries, the Eagles tried to rely on their strength in this game, but it wasn’t enough.

“Obviously it didn’t start well, I mean I was 24-0 down at the start, of course there’s no excuse for that. “We didn’t practice well enough and we didn’t play well enough,” head coach Nick Sirianni said after the game.

  • The Buccaneers received the ball first and went straight down the field after an 8/9, 62-yard, touchdown run by Baker Mayfield. Mike Evans caught a 2-yard pass in the left corner of the end zone to give the Bucs an early lead. (Buccaneers 7 – Eagles 0)
  • The Eagles opened the game offensively with a three-and-out, giving the ball right back to Tampa Bay after gaining just seven yards on 3rd-and-10. Dallas Goedert made the catch and picked up where he left off after his 10-catch, 170-yard performance against the Saints.
  • “Same thing as before, we shot ourselves in the foot, we have to be able to come out early and move the ball and get points on the first drive, we haven’t been able to do that this year,” Goedert said.
  • The Buccaneers offense continued its momentum, moving quickly down the field again and completing the game with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Trey Palmer. It only took 5 plays to go 80 yards and extend their lead. (Buccaneers 14 – Eagles 0)
  • With 1:06 left in the quarter, the Bucs’ punt hit Cooper DeJean’s leg when it was hit after Isaiah Rodgers pushed the Bucs’ defender into DeJean, causing the ball to go live and Tampa Bay to recover to them handing the ball over to the Eagles ’22.
  • “Being a shooter in my career, I know not to hit the punt returner. So since I’m guarding him, I was like, ‘I’m going to push him into the returner’ and get the flag because that’s part of the game.” “I kind of thought it was going to be a flag, which it was, but they finally picked up on it and said it was because I pushed him. I’ve never heard that before, but it is what it is,” Rodgers said.
  • The Buccaneers’ success continued in the second quarter as they took advantage of good field position by scoring their third score of the half with a one-yard run by Mayfield on 4th-and-goal. (Buccaneers 21 – Eagles 0)
  • The Eagles’ defense kept the Buccaneers out of the end zone after Kameron Johnson ran a wide-open touchdown with 7:18 left in the half. Chase McLaughlin capped the 11-play, 65-yard drive with a 21-yard field goal. (Buccaneers 24 – Eagles 0)
  • “It’s just a matter of reacting, really reacting to what’s going on. Different things happen over the course of a game. When you go in and say, ‘I’m going to attack a team like this’, but at the end of the day you have to go out and play, have a feel for the game and what they’re doing. And that’s where we all have to get better, starting with me,” Hurts said of the reaction to the 24-0 deficit.
  • The Eagles got their first first down of the game with 6:29 left in the second quarter on a 7-yard scramble by Jalen Hurts.
  • The Eagles began to put together a drive, showed signs of life and converted a 3rd-and-1 with the tush push to put them at the Tampa Bay 33 with 4:53 left. After the tush push, Hurts found Goedert on consecutive plays, one for nine yards and another for 18, to set them up at the Bucs’ 6-yard line.
  • LANDING! On 4th-and-goal, Hurts ran out of the pocket, bought time and found Parris Campbell in the back of the end zone to put the Eagles on the field. It was the first touchdown as an Eagle for Campbell, who was called up from the practice squad for the game. (Buccaneers 24 – Eagles 7)
