Kurt Warner “physically unwell” due to quarterback play in Week 3

Going into this NFL season, quarterback play has largely declined, to the point where there were even members of the media calling for a ban on the Cover 2 concept on the defensive side of the ball. And at least in the eyes of NFL Network’s Kurt Warner, things didn’t exactly improve much in Week 3.

There are several possible factors as to why we could potentially see poor quarterback play this season. Perhaps offenses have actually failed to grasp the defense and are running more Cover 2 schemes than ever before, something Mel Kiper Jr. alluded to in his plea for a ban.

Warner doesn’t seem too happy with the offensive plans either. He also took to social media Monday morning to express his frustration with some of the route concepts he sees on tape.

“WHY? I just don’t understand the purpose of some of these route concepts,” Warner wrote. “Can someone please explain to us what we’re trying to accomplish???”

We also saw three quarterbacks who did not enter the season as starters start in Week 3 (Miami, Green Bay, Carolina), either due to injury or poor performance by the original starter. Additionally, three rookie quarterbacks started in Week 3, in addition to Anthony Richardson, who missed most of his rookie season in 2023 due to injury.

Whatever the case may be, Warner certainly knows what to look for when it comes to competent quarterback play. And he clearly doesn’t see it happening at the start of the 2024-25 NFL season.
