How Bucs’ CV Vea could make a big impact in a limited role against the Eagles

TAMPA — Two weeks after suffering a Grade 2 medial ligament sprain in his right knee, Vita Vea could return to the Bucs’ lineup Sunday against the Eagles.

Even if he doesn’t appear in the statistics, the 1.90 meter tall, 140 kilogram defensive tackle could have a big impact on the game.

Do you need proof?

In 2020, Vea suffered a broken leg during a Thursday night game in Chicago in early October. The injury was expected to end the season and Vea missed the next 13 games.

But the Bucs looked good in the playoffs and he was able to return to the NFC Championship Game in Green Bay. With Aaron Rodgers having an MVP season, the Bucs needed to put pressure on the Packers quarterback.

Vea was limited to passing downs and was only on the field for 33 snaps on the day. He didn’t record a single statistic. But he consistently pushed into the pocket, preventing Rodgers from moving up.

Vea also drew double teams, allowing outside linebackers Shaquil Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul to get some one-on-one play. They combined for five sacks in a 31-26 win that took the Bucs to Super Bowl 55.

Vea, who is training with a brace on his right knee, is officially considered questionable for Sunday’s game.

“He got better as the week went on,” head coach Todd Bowles said Friday, “but we’ll see.”

The Eagles have the NFL’s third-best rushing offense and running back Saquon Barkley leads the league with 351 yards and four touchdowns.

Due to his injury and the fact that the Bucs play the Falcons four days after the game, Vea could be limited to a certain number of snaps. Will they use him like they did four years ago at Lambeau Field?

Three months after being carted off the field in Chicago with a seemingly season-ending leg injury, defensive tackle Vita Vea returned to help the Bucs overcome the Packers in the NFC Championship Game.
