Georgia’s heartbreaking loss to Alabama

Everything good, bad and worse from the Dawgs’ devastating loss to Alabama on the road.

The Georgia Bulldogs’ regular-season winning streak ended last night as the Dawgs narrowly managed a miraculous comeback in Tuscaloosa. There is so much to talk about from one of the most exciting games of the season. Here’s the good, the bad and the ugly of last night’s loss.

Moral victories have no place in college football, and last night’s loss will sting for a while. But if you told Georgia fans at halftime that a 23-point road deficit would be overcome and Georgia would be ahead at the end of the fourth quarter, no one would believe you. Yes, seeing the No. 4 team in the country score 28 points at home is disastrous, and that’s why the Dawgs lost. But the heart, attitude and determination that this Georgian team has shown away from home must make Georgian fans feel good about their team’s continued development. Especially in postseason games where road conditions are unlikely to be a factor.

Going into the game, Jalen Milroe was listed as the “X-factor” for Alabama, and Kirby Smart and his staff made a point of emphasizing the importance of stopping him all week. It’s safe to say the Dawgs failed in that goal, as Milroe completed 27 of his 33 passes for 374 yards and added another 117 yards on the ground. While the Dawgs’ defense certainly did a much better job of hindering Bama’s offensive attack in the second half, Milroe’s effectiveness was fairly consistent throughout the evening and his performance against the Dawgs was nothing short of spectacular.

Mental mistakes, turnovers, missed opportunities on offense, misses on defense and basically anything else you can think of. The first thirty minutes of last night’s game were easily some of the worst a Georgia team has ever played under Kirby Smart. If the Bulldogs had made just one or two fewer crucial errors in the first half, the gap the Dawgs had to dig out of in the second half could have been a little smaller and last night’s contest could have ended very differently.

It’s been a while since Georgia lost a regular season game, and the impact of the loss is certainly being felt by Dawg fans across the country. But there’s a lot to learn from this loss, and the Dawgs’ national title and playoff hopes are still very much alive. The Dawgs return to Athens next week to host the Auburn Tigers.
