‘SNL’: Bowen Yang channels Chappell Roan as Moo Deng, the baby hippo who makes Colin Jost cum

Chances are, if you’ve scrolled through social media at all in the last few weeks, you’ve come across Moo Deng, the baby hippo in Thailand who’s stealing hearts. But on Saturday night, Moo Deng stopped by “SNL” to set some boundaries for fans.

Of course, it was Bowen Yang who played the baby hippo, as he had experience giving voice to creatures and things that can’t actually speak. Yang’s Moo Deng wore an actual hippo costume and got blunt during a Weekend Update that reflected artist Chappell Roan’s recent social media statements.

“For the last 10 weeks I’ve been running around non-stop, eating salad, trying to bite the hose off a water hose, the water off a hose, and the reaction has been overwhelming,” she said. “But it’s gotten to the point where I need to set some boundaries.”

As Moo Deng’s speech continued, she periodically called for the hose, whereupon a hose would literally spray out water for Yang to chew on. By the end of the segment, host Colin Jost was drenched and mourning “my wig!”

“Reminder, women don’t owe you anything! If I trip over things in my enclosure and bite my trainer’s knee, I’m at work. “That’s the project,” the hippopotamus continued. “Don’t call my name or expect a photo just because I’m your parasocial best friend or because you appreciate my talent.”

Yes, this news may sound familiar to you. It was quite similar to recent statements from Chappell Roan, who posted a powerful statement on Instagram last month. Of course, Jost noticed this and brought it to Moo Deng’s attention and asked if she knew who the singer was.

“I’m 10 weeks old, Colin, of course I am. By the way, leave her alone!” Moo Deng replied. “Let her take as much time as she needs for her mental health. We both deserve patience and mercy, so stop harassing her and stop throwing shellfish at her!”

Before Moo Deng left Weekend Update, she had to add a disclaimer.

“Also, I know I’m only 10 weeks old, but this is very important to me, so please listen, I will not be voting in this year’s election, the presidential election,” she said.

This was, of course, another nod to Chappell Roan, who has faced criticism over the past week for her stance on and handling of this year’s election.
