Bus carrying more than 20 passengers crashes on I-10 in downtown Phoenix; 1 dead

PHOENIX (AZFamily) – One person died and over a dozen others were injured in a bus accident early Saturday morning.

According to DPS, a bus crashed on eastbound I-10 near 7th Street around 5:30 a.m. It was the only vehicle involved in the collision.

It was initially believed that there were up to 35 people on board, but Phoenix Fire clarified that there were 23 people on the bus at the time of the collision. According to the fire department, 17 people were treated and taken to various hospitals with “mostly minor injuries.”

Police later confirmed that one person had died. The victim’s name has not been released.

The Arizona Family news team filmed passengers being loaded onto stretchers. Others waited outside the bus with their pets.

The bus blocked several lanes of traffic for a few hours, but the highway was fully reopened around 9 a.m

At least six emergency vehicles were stopped on the highway. Cameras in the area captured a traffic jam that stretched about a mile and a half from 7th Avenue to 7th Street.

The cause of the accident and the cause of death of the victim are still under investigation.
