Groundbreaking for the new IU Health Hospital in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – Today marked a significant milestone for the Fort Wayne community as Indiana University Health (IU Health) held a groundbreaking ceremony for its first hospital in the region. Officials say this development promises to improve access to health care and create hundreds of jobs for local residents.

After six years of serving the Summit City through physician practices, IU Health says it is investing $421 million to build a state-of-the-art hospital. This project received approval from the IU Health Board of Directors in May, underscoring the organization’s commitment to expanding affordable health care services in the region.

The new facility includes:

  • 140 patient beds
  • 17 emergency room exam rooms
  • 6 operating rooms
  • 3 catheterization laboratories for advanced cardiac procedures
  • 3 to 4 endoscopy rooms for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures

In addition, a doctor’s office will be integrated into the hospital, enabling coordinated and comprehensive patient care.

Economic impact

The new hospital is to be built 500 jobs and bring here 60 other healthcare providerswhich stimulates the local economy and offers new opportunities in the healthcare sector.

Location and timeline

The hospital will be located in the 9600 block of Lower Huntington Roadnear IU Health’s existing medical office buildings on Ernst Road. IU Health expects to welcome its first patients Spring 2027.
