MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Pep Guardiola has told elite soccer players that they are the only ones who can force a change in a growing dispute over the number of games they are asked to play.

Manchester City midfielder Rodri says players are on the verge of a strike as the fixture list becomes increasingly congested, coupled with an expansion of the Club World Cup in the United States next year.

City coach Guardiola said on Friday that the game’s stars may need to “raise a voice and do something” if they want to take a stand.

“If something is going to change, it always has to come from the players,” said Guardiola. “This business (football) can be without managers, can be without sports directors, can be without media, can be without owners, but without the players it cannot be played.”

“So they are the only ones who have the power to do this.”

Players’ unions have challenged FIFA in court over the expansion of the Club World Cup. Next year the Club World Cup will be held for the first time with 32 teams instead of the previous seven. For many major leagues, the offseason is scheduled for June-July.

World players’ union FIFPRO has raised concerns about the increasing physical and mental demands on players, but the competition has been welcomed by the European Club Association, which represents the continent’s top clubs, including City.

Unions in England and France filed a lawsuit against FIFA at the Brussels Commercial Court in June, challenging FIFA’s “decisions to unilaterally set the international match calendar.”

The Champions League was also expanded this season to include two more games in the redesigned group phase.

Spanish international Rodri took part in ten different competitions in the 2022/23 season, when the season was put under additional pressure by a mid-season World Cup. He made 64 appearances for club and country last season, including a run to the European Championship final, which Spain won.

This season ends with the Club World Cup, which could include seven more games if City reach the final.

Rodri, who was nominated for the Ballon d’Or, said strikes may have to take place.

“If this continues, I truly believe there will come a moment when we have no choice,” he said. “It is something that worries us because we are the ones who suffer from it.”

FC Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany believes that the number of appearances a player can make per season should be limited, putting the onus on coaches to limit the demands on their top stars.

“It’s not just the strain on the players, but also the travel. “Some of these guys go from playing in the Champions League to a national team game in Korea or something and then back again,” Kompany said. “If you do that for 70, 75, 80 games, there comes a point where it’s no longer realistic, so I can only support the players’ feeling up to that point.”

Hosting the Club World Cup in 2025 means top players will have to play major competitions for three consecutive years in the usual off-season, as the European Championships and Copa America took place this year and the next World Cup is in 2026.

Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso said the players needed to be asked about the demands placed on them.
