Louisville

The Cardinals are undefeated heading into this game but still have to deal with expected competition in South Bend this weekend. Louisville opened ACC play last week with a win over Georgia Tech, its toughest test yet, and that game remained tied until the end of the third quarter before the Cardinals had a blocked field goal that was returned for a touchdown in the fourth quarters caused the separation.

Louisville’s offense has found a good complement to the transfer QB Tyler Shoughwho celebrates his 25thTh Birthday on Saturday. Shough transferred from Texas Tech last offseason and is in his seventh collegiate season. He’s leading the Cardinals to a productive passing game so far: The team enters the week ranked 18thTh in FBS in passing yards/game (308.0) and he didn’t turn the ball over – in fact, Louisville is one of three teams entering Week 5 without a giveaway this season (along with Indiana and Georgia). This offense will face a formidable opponent in Notre Dame’s elite defense this weekend.

Notre Dame

The Fighting Irish have gotten off to a slow start to the 2024 season compared to initial expectations. Notre Dame headed to College Station and defeated Texas A&M in one of the biggest games of Week 1, but then completely lost momentum in a surprise upset loss to Northern Illinois in Week 2. A loss could eliminate Notre Dame from playoff contention , even in the new era with 12 teams clinching playoff spots. While there is a lot at stake for both teams on Saturday, Notre Dame is in more of a must-win situation.
And to secure the win they need, the Fighting Irish will rely on the legs and arms of the transfer QB Riley Leonardwhich has so far been more productive on the ground than in the air. He scored his first passing TD of the season last week against Miami (Ohio), but also added two touchdowns and 143 yards on the ground, bolstering an already strong Irish rush game led by Jeremiyah love. Notre Dame will face a Louisville team with a stronger defense than most of its previous opponents and will need to diversify its offense beyond the run to be successful.

The offense has an excellent defense that can likely put the team in a good position to succeed. The Fighting Irish have never allowed 17 or more points in a game this season – they’ve given up 10Th in FBS in points allowed – and are similarly strong in other important defensive statistics.
