Knicks and Timberwolves close to swapping All-Stars in potential blockbuster trade: reports

The New York Knicks are making another big move before the season begins to capitalize on their championship window.

According to multiple reports, the Knicks are close to acquiring Karl-Anthony Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves and will send Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo.

According to some reports, the Knicks are also adding a first-round pick.

The Knicks made it to the second round of the playoffs last year without Randle, who dislocated his shoulder earlier this year and missed the rest of the season.

Towns was part of a T-Wolves team with Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert that made it to the Western Conference Finals before falling to the Dallas Mavericks.

Randle had a complicated legacy in New York, often frustrating fans with his play and even giving them a thumbs down because they admittedly booed him. But during his tenure, Randle reinvigorated himself as a player, earning his first two All-Star nominations and averaging 22.6 points and 9.9 rebounds per contest.

DiVincenzo averaged a career-high 15.5 points per game last season while topping 40% from 3-pointers for the first time in his career , as he started the best of his career with 63 games.

However, Towns is on a path to the Hall of Fame and is in the conversation for the greatest shooter of all time. He was named an All-Star for the fourth time last season and his 41.6% from three was the second-best mark of his career.

It’s a homecoming for Towns, who grew up in nearby central New Jersey and attended St. Joseph’s High School in Metuchen. He was the first overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft out of Kentucky.

Towns allegedly found out about the news and posted on X: “…”

Earlier this offseason, the Knicks acquired Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets, further solidifying themselves as the “Nova Knicks” – Bridges, Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart played together at Villanova. But so did DiVincenzo.

A big man move was necessary for the Knicks – they lost Isaiah Hartenstein as a free agent and it was reported that the oft-injured Mitchell Robinson won’t be ready to start the season.

The two teams are reportedly in the process of finalizing details. The Athletic points out that the salaries of the three players involved do not match those. However, it looks like when, not if, this deal will be completed.
