Rhys Hoskins’ grand slam gets the game off to a quick start

The Milwaukee Brewers open their final series of the regular season tonight by hosting the New York Mets at American Family Field.

New York begins the day in a dead heat with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final two Wild Card spots, while the Atlanta Braves appear one game behind.

The Mets will then leave Milwaukee and play a massive doubleheader against the Braves on Monday in Atlanta.

Brice Turang makes another run

Manager Pat Murphy said he brought in Brice Turang at first to give him some additional insight into left-handed pitching before the postseason.

He delivered his second hit in as many at-bats with a bloop double to center in the second, a hit that scored Blake Perkins to make it 5-0. Perkins reached on an error and then stole second despite being batted out by left-hander Sean Manaea.

The Brewers suffered a blow in the third when Sal Frelick injured his left hip or buttock while hitting the wall along the right field line while trying to catch a foul ball off the bat of Francisco Alvarez.

Frelick had to be helped into the Milwaukee clubhouse and was replaced by Garrett Mitchell.

There were also fireworks in the fourth when Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was sent off by home plate umpire Ramon De Jesus after a questionable third strike against Alvarez.

What a start for the Brewers

Milwaukee got a leadoff single from Turang and then two two-out walks from William Contreras and Willy Adames to bring Rhys Hoskins to the plate.

With the score tied at 2-2, he blasted a 386-foot home run to left to electrify the crowd and give the Brewers a quick 4-0 lead. It was the third grand slam of the season for Hoskins and the 10th of the season for Milwaukee, tying a franchise record set in 1995.
