The Governor of Justice announces the status of preparations for 22 counties in advance of Hurricane Helene

W.Va. (WSAZ) – Ahead of expected heavy rains and strong winds from the remnants of Hurricane Helene, Governor Jim Justice today issued a state of preparedness for 22 West Virginia counties.

7 weather warnings in force

The National Weather Service is forecasting heavy rain and strong winds over the weekend.

“While this weather can help with issues related to our ongoing drought, too much could lead to major problems like flooding and power outages,” said Governor Justice. “That’s why I’m declaring this state of preparedness – to ensure our state authorities are ready. We need the precipitation, but we also need to use common sense when it comes to dangerous weather. Please exercise extreme caution as we deal with the aftermath of this hurricane.”

The State of Preparedness allows the West Virginia Emergency Management Division (WVEMD) to deploy personnel and resources to respond quickly to emergencies that may arise. Coordination centers have been put on standby to report to the state emergency call center if necessary.

The following counties are subject to the state of preparation:

Boone, Braxton, Cabell, Clay, Fayette, Greenbrier, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Monroe, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Putnam, Raleigh, Randolph, Summers, Wayne, Webster and Wyoming.
