Milan coach Paulo Fonseca explains his decisions against Lecce, including an injury update on Alvaro Morata and why Rafael Leao is one of “many players” who can wear the captain’s armband.

It starts at 7.45pm UK time (6.45pm GMT) in San Siro.

Alvaro Morata shook off an early setback to be the same starting XI that beat rivals Inter 2-1 in the Derby della Madonnina on Sunday, restarting their disappointing season.

“There is always a good atmosphere as our fans bring great love. “Obviously they have more confidence after the derby and we want to play to make our fans proud again,” Fonseca told Sky Sport Italia.

“We want to convey a feeling of consistency. We had doubts about Morata’s condition yesterday, we assessed him today, spoke to the player, he wanted to play and I think it’s important to maintain this form. However, it will be a different game tonight.”

Fonseca presented Rafael Leao with the Milan armband

Theo Hernandez was captain in the showdown against Inter, but the armband will be handed to Rafael Leao here as Davide Calabria is out injured.

“That’s because I want different players who can wear the captain’s armband and today it’s Rafa, but there are many who can take on that leadership role.”

Matteo Gabbia was the surprise starter in defense against Inter and ended up scoring the winning goal with a late header. Is he now the first choice central defender alongside Fikayo Tomori?

“Gabbia is also a leader, he is very focused, concentrated and also has good timing for attacking moves. He is in good form, it is important to have a confident defense, that is why I have not made any changes,” Fonseca concluded.

Strahinja Pavlovic was one of the biggest summer investments in the transfer market but sits on the bench alongside Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
