2024 NFL Bad Beats: Brandon Aubrey’s first career miss from 50 yards

Every week in NFLBettors, sportsbooks, or both are complaining of some form of bad beat.

Whether it’s a spread pick, a moneyline bet, or a total score bet, there is always an event that affects multiple bets.

In the Thursday Night Football game between the Giants and the Cowboys, it was the Cowboys’ spreads (-5.5) that were troubling bettors.

Let’s take a look at how it all went.

Brandon Aubrey misses first ever 50-yard field goal

Bettors who had bet on the Cowboys to cover a 5.5-point spread saw victory flash before their eyes.

With 2:28 minutes left in the fourth quarter and the Cowboys leading 20:15, Dallas wanted to finish off the game on the road against New York.

Mike McCarthy’s team ran the ball three plays in a row to use up as much time as possible, with the drive leading to a fourth down with 32 seconds left in the game.

Brandon Aubrey, who was 12-for-12 this season and 48-50 in his career, trotted onto the field to beat what everyone expected to be an automatic mark. To illustrate, Aubrey had made a 60-yard field goal early in the third quarter, a week after setting the record for the second-longest field goal in NFL history with a 65-yard kick.

What’s even more incredible is that the player made him 16-for-16 on field goals of more than 50 yards in his career – extending his record for the longest career of any kicker in NFL history.

So what does a 51-yard attempt mean to him, especially when the game is essentially already over?

Somehow Aubrey missed it. His streak was snapped, and more importantly, bettors who used the Cowboys to cover the 5.5-point spread lost. The field goal would also have won for bettors who bet on the spread when it was six points.

Daniel Jones then threw an interception in a final attempt to win the game, and the final score remained 20-15. With three 60-yard field goals in his career, Aubrey only needs one more to break Brett Maher’s NFL record. He also joined Greg Zuerlein, Matt Prater and Maher as the only kickers in NFL history with three or more 60-yard field goals.
