Dexter Lawrence vows to stop Giants’ Cowboys’ layoff drought

The last time the Giants released a Cowboys quarterback was on December 19, 2021.

Joe Judge was the head coach, defensive coordinator Patrick Graham called the play, and Lorenzo Carter hit Dak Prescott in the back and forced a fumble.

Four Giants-Cowboys games have passed since then.

“That’s going to change,” defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence said before Thursday’s match. “I feel like we can track him pretty well. We just have to refine the plan and execute it well.”

If anything is going to change, Lawrence will likely have to be the main trigger.

Lawrence had one of the best games of his two-time Pro Bowl career on Sunday, helping the Giants to their first win with two sacks, including a drive-stopper on a fourth-and-1 against the Browns.

He also forced an intentional grounding on one of his four quarterback hits.

“I’m tired of losing to anybody,” Lawrence said when asked about going 1-9 against the Cowboys in his career. “I don’t care more about one game than the other. They all hit the same way. They all count equally. I still want to win. It doesn’t matter who we win or how we win. I just want to win.”

The Giants were created in the offseason – with the acquisition of pass rusher Brian Burns – to better combat the vaunted offensive lines of the Cowboys and Eagles that have given them so much trouble over the years.

But breaking into the backfield isn’t the same as tearing down Prescott.

“He’s a big guy. He can run,” Lawrence said. “He likes to sit in the pocket, but when he gets out of the way he is also dynamic and throws the ball around the field. We just have to make sure we keep him in check and take him down.”
