Amy Poehler can’t contain her feelings for Beyoncé.

Like most of us, the Emmy Award-winning actress is obsessed with the superstar’s music as well as his comedic tour de force in the 2002 Austin Powers film “Goldmember,” so Poehler is naturally unsettled when she learns that Beyoncé has recently been in… called “Inside Out 2” the best movie she saw this year in a rare interview with GQ.

“Well, she’s a virgin, so she knows what she’s talking about,” quips Poehler, who voices Joy in the Disney/Pixar animated hit. “Wow! I’m kind of overwhelmed that Beyoncé liked it – I need a minute. (Laughs.) That means a lot. She’s just such a GOAT; she’s incredible in everything she does.”

“Inside Out 2” is now streaming on Disney+ and is available on digital platforms such as Apple TV and Prime Video. The sequel grossed approximately $1.7 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time and the eighth highest-grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation).

Poehler attributes much of the sequel’s success to its timing. Like the first film, “Inside Out 2” takes place in the mind of a girl named Riley (Kensington Tallman), only this time she’s dealing with new teenage emotions like fear (Maya Hawke). In the nearly decade since the last film, popular culture has helped normalize discussions about mental health, particularly among Generation Z.

“People were really willing to talk about fear and how it clashes with joy and what toxic positivity is,” Poehler says. “People have spent the last 10 years really talking about their feelings, so it just felt like everyone was ready to face things where they were.”

And for an audience like Beyoncé, a mother of three, “there are a lot of themes around parenting,” Poehler says. “How do you try to let the people you love experience these things and not try to feel it for them?”

In the three months since Inside Out 2 hit theaters, Poehler has enjoyed watching audiences embrace Pouchy (James Austin Johnson), a talking fanny pack that Joy meets in Riley’s mind. (She admits that the character is a bit strange: “He doesn’t mind opening his pouch, let’s just say that.”) The film also teases Riley’s “Deep Dark Secret” (Steve Purcell), although to the disappointment of some Fans In the post-credits scene, it turns out to be pretty harmless. (The filmmakers didn’t want to “burden the children” by not discussing the secret, Poehler explains.)

The film was a highlight of the “best summer ever” for Poehler, who turned 53 last week. The popular “Saturday Night Live” veteran rang in her birthday at the red carpet premiere of Marvel’s “Agatha All Along,” where she joined her former “Parks and Recreation” co-stars Aubrey Plaza, Kathryn Hahn and Adam Scott celebrated.

“I loved being in my 50s,” Poehler says. “I have had a truly wonderful year full of love and I am grateful for that. I try to look at the things I have and not focus too much on what I don’t have.”

Looking ahead to awards season, “I really hope, to be completely honest, that people consider ‘Inside Out 2’ for a best picture Oscar,” she says. The last time an animated film received an Oscar nomination for best picture was in 2011 for Disney/Pixar’s “Toy Story 3.”

She insists there have been no discussions about “Inside Out 3” yet, but “I’m always up for more. I play Joy, so I’m always like, ‘Let’s go! Let’s go! Let’s go!’” ”

And who knows? Maybe Beyoncé could express a new emotion in the third film.

“From your lips to God’s ears,” Poehler says with a grin. “God, aka Beyoncé.”
