Jason Benetti calls for the Detroit Tigers to make a comeback against the Rays in the finals

Jason Benetti is having the time of his life in his first season as the Detroit Tigers play-by-play broadcaster for Bally Sports Detroit.

Benetti jumped ship from the historically poor Chicago White Sox just in time and was on call as the Tigers posted a 29-11 record since Aug. 10 to turn an 11-game playoff deficit into a 2½-game lead The Minnesota Twins will take part in the American League Wild Card race in the final series of the regular season at Comerica Park.

Thursday’s call summed up the mood of Tigers fans around the world as they rallied for another epic 4-3 win against the Tampa Bay Rays.

“Tigers win again!” Benetti screamed as Jason Foley beat Jose Siri with a 98 mph sinking punch to end the game.

“A city that doesn’t care about the odds has a baseball team that can compete.” Benetti saidindicating that the Tigers had less than a 1% chance of making the playoffs in August, according to prediction models, and just a single-digit chance less than two weeks ago.

According to Fangraphs, the Tigers now have a 96.6% chance of making the playoffs. The Tigers’ magic number is 2 at the Twins and they can clinch a playoff spot against the Chicago White Sox on Friday (tickets can be found here).
