  • Avoid windows.

What should you do if you drive during a tornado warning?

When driving, especially on highways or expressways, do not attempt to escape a tornado.

If you are driving in an area under a tornado warning, look for ways to safely get off the road and out of your vehicle, preferably seeking shelter in a sturdy building.

As a last resort, lie flat in the nearest depression, ditch or culvert and cover your head with your arms.

What is the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning?

A tornado warning is issued when a tornado is sighted or indicated on radar and poses an immediate threat to life and property.

If you are in an area where a tornado warning is in effect, immediately seek shelter on the lowest floor of a stable building. If you are outdoors, in a vehicle or in a recreational vehicle, go to the nearest stable shelter and seek shelter.

A tornado warning is issued when the area is capable of producing tornadoes. If you are in a tornado warning area, the NWS recommends having a plan in place in case a tornado occurs. Be prepared to act quickly when a tornado warning is issued.
