NWS confirms tornado Thursday morning in Bluffton as Helene approaches

The National Weather Service in Charleston confirmed that a tornado touched down in Bluffton on Thursday morning as Hurricane Helene approached Florida.

As Hurricane Helene continues to move toward Florida, the effects of the storm are already being felt in the South Carolina Lowcountry, where a tornado hit the Bluffton area on Thursday morning, the National Weather Service in Charleston said.

A tornado warning was issued for the Bluffton area in Beaufort County from 7:00 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., National Weather Service meteorologist Emily McGraw said Thursday morning. The warning spawned a brief tornado in the area, McGraw said.

“A radar signature indicated a tornado was on the ground,” McGraw said. “Fallen branches and small debris were on the ground in the Palmetto Bluff area of Bluffton, and tree damage was also reported on Daufuskie Island.”

McGraw said the tornado was spotted on radar at about 7:03 a.m. She asked that anyone with damage reports related to this tornado be reported to the National Weather Service at nws.charlestonsc.noaa.gov.

The National Weather Service has also issued a tornado warning for the Lowcountry, including Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton counties, until 9 p.m. Thursday night.

“We would like to remind citizens to have their weather radios and other sources of the latest weather information nearby during the night as there is a risk of tornadoes,” McGraw said.

Contessa Ciuffreda lives in Bluffton Park in Bluffton and witnessed what looked like a funnel cloud or tornado around 7:30 a.m. She has lived in the area since last year.

“I wasn’t scared when I saw it (the funnel cloud),” Ciuffreda said. “There was a spiritual dynamic in the air that made me get up. Then I saw the weather and took the picture.”
