Broncos place ILB Alex Singleton on IR and promote RB Tyler Badie to the active roster

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, West Virginia — The Broncos have lost one of their best defenders and team captain.

Inside linebacker Alex Singleton suffered a torn ACL and will be placed on the injured list, ending his season, head coach Sean Payton announced Wednesday.

“He tore his ACL last week, oh, in the middle of the game,” said head coach Sean Payton. “But he played two-thirds of the game with the injury. That was pretty remarkable. And then he spoke up. He felt a little bit of pain. They looked at it, we looked at it a little more and then it was actually time. He’ll probably have surgery in about two weeks.”

Payton also announced that the Broncos are promoting running back Tyler Badie to their active roster.

Singleton, who is playing his third season with the Broncos, led Denver in tackles in both 2022 and 2023. Last season, Singleton recorded an incredible 177 tackles, which was a franchise record since at least 1991.

Through three games, Singleton averaged more than 10 tackles per game and recorded an interception on the Broncos’ first defensive series of the year.

Despite his injury, Singleton played every snap in the Broncos’ Week 3 win over the Buccaneers. Payton said Singleton’s injury occurred on the play where Brandon Jones intercepted a pass in the first quarter.

Badie, a 2022 sixth-round pick of the Ravens, led the Broncos with nine carries for 70 yards in Week 3. The Missouri product appeared in three career games and totaled 112 all-purpose yards and one touchdown.
