Tropical Storm Isaac forms over the subtropical Atlantic: The Alabama Weather Blog

Tropical Storm Isaac has officially formed in the open central subtropical Atlantic Ocean, the NWS National Hurricane Center in Miami announced. According to the last advisory issued on September 25, 2024 at 11:00 p.m. AST, Isaac is located at approximately 37.1°N and 54.1°W, about 1,480 miles west of the Azores and 690 miles northeast of Bermuda. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 km/h) and is currently moving east at 12 mph (19 km/h). Minimum central pressure is 997 mb (29.44 inches).

Fortunately, there are currently no coastal warnings or watches in place. The storm is expected to maintain its eastward motion over the coming days, with some strengthening likely, potentially reaching hurricane strength by the end of the week. Tropical storm winds will reach up to 220 miles from the storm’s center.

Waves generated by Isaac are already impacting the Bermuda coast and could reach the Azores by the weekend. These conditions can create life-threatening surf and rip currents, so residents and visitors in affected areas should check local weather warnings.
