Schools in Broward, Monroe and Palm Beach to remain closed Thursday, schools in Miami-Dade to remain open as Hurricane Helene approaches – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

(WSVN) – Most school districts in South Florida remain closed as they continue to monitor the development of Hurricane Helene.

Miami-Dade Public Schools and Broward County Public Schools released a joint statement Wednesday announcing that schools will remain open Thursday.

However, BCPS officials issued a statement Wednesday evening saying that the county’s schools would remain closed Thursday following the 5 p.m. warning regarding the storm’s path.

A statement from BCPS states, among other things: “This includes before and after school care, extracurricular activities, field trips, and evening events and classes.”

M-DCPS officials said outdoor activities at their schools will be indoors while outdoor sporting events will be canceled. Afterschool care will be open and evening classes will be held as usual.

The Archdiocese of Miami will remain open on Thursday.

Earlier Wednesday, Palm Beach County School District officials announced that all district-operated schools and offices would be closed Thursday. In addition, all extracurricular activities, after-school programs, sporting events, school assemblies and other on-campus events were canceled, officials said.

The Monroe County School District also announced that it would close schools and district offices on Thursday.
