1 fatality after small plane crashes at Haines Junction Airport, Yukon

The Yukon coroner says her office is investigating a death related to a plane crash Monday at Haines Junction Airport in Yukon.

According to the Transportation Safety Board (TSB), a Cessna U206G belonging to Rocking Star Adventures Ltd. crashed on Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. when the aircraft “collided with the airport property,” according to an email from the TSB.

The TSB did not disclose how many people were on board the plane or provide any details about injuries or deaths.

However, in a statement to CBC News early Monday evening, Chief Coroner Heather Jones confirmed that her office is “investigating a death related to a plane crash that occurred this afternoon at Haines Jct Airport.”

Haines Junction Mayor Bruce Tomlin also told CBC News on Monday evening that rescue planes had previously been sent from Whitehorse and that “people were injured.”

He said the incident was “very shocking”.

The TSB said in an email that it is still “gathering information, assessing the incident and determining next steps.”

The RCMP said late Monday afternoon that they had secured the site and were awaiting the arrival of Transport Canada investigators.

Rocking Star Adventures, based in Burwash Landing in the Yukon, offers tourists scenic flights over nearby glaciers, as well as charter services for the mining and oil and gas industries, as well as for research work.

The company’s website states that the Cessna 206 aircraft can carry up to five passengers.
