No impact expected in Massachusetts – NBC Boston

All eyes are on the approaching Tropical Storm Helene, which is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane as it moves north toward the United States.

Here in New England, however, no serious impacts from the powerful storm system are expected.

Temperatures around 15 degrees, some rain in Boston

Our land breeze continues on Tuesday, with another cloudy day and highs around 15 degrees. However, some areas will be luckier than others. Burlington, Vermont, for example, will see highs around 21 degrees and sunshine for most of the day.

That’s a stark contrast to Boston, where waves are rolling in from the coast, drizzle and low clouds, and temperatures in the 15s. Waves on the coast are still high, at 5-9 feet, and beach erosion will continue through midweek, with dangerous rip currents. Lows Tuesday night will fall to 40 degrees Fahrenheit in northern New England and 50 degrees Fahrenheit elsewhere.

Scattered rain showers on Wednesday

Wednesday will be much the same, with more clouds and temperatures in the 15s. Scattered showers will arrive west of us late in the day as a developing low pressure system moves in aloft. Showers will become heavier Thursday and Friday morning as the low pressure system moves toward the Gulf of Maine and a cold front passes through. Total precipitation will be about 1/4 inch from this system, which will move through quickly.

Weekend forecast

High pressure will move in over the weekend, with temperatures on Monday ranging between 15 and 21 degrees. A few sudden showers are possible inland on Saturday afternoon as we have a cool layer of air at altitude. However, most areas will remain dry. The next chance of rain will not be until the middle of next week.

Helene update

The storm is expected to rapidly intensify in the Gulf of Mexico this week, making landfall in the Big Bend area of Florida on Thursday through Friday. A storm surge of 1.5 to 2.4 meters is expected in Tampa Bay, and 3 to 4.5 meters along the Big Bend.

West Florida, the Panhandle, and much of the Southern United States are expected to see 6 to 12 inches of rain through Saturday as the storm moves inland into the Ohio Valley. We do not expect any impacts to New England from this storm.

Stay tuned for updates!
