World champion and Champions League winner ends his football career at the age of 31 after knee injury

Raphael Varane, the famous former Manchester United, Real Madrid and French national team defender, has retired from football at the age of 31. Varane’s decision comes after an illustrious career spanning over a decade full of titles and memorable performances at the highest level.

Varane moves to Como, but injuries remain

In July 2024, Varane joined Italian club Como on a free transfer. However, his time with the club was prematurely terminated after he sustained a knee injury on his debut against Sampdoria. Although his time on the pitch was brief, the centre-back has confirmed that he will remain at the club in a non-playing role and continue his career in football in a new capacity.

“I set the highest standards for myself. I want to leave strong and not just hold on to the game,” Varane said on Instagram. His words underline the personal pride and professionalism that have characterized his illustrious career.

From Lens to Real Madrid: A glorious career

Varane’s career in football began at French club Lens, where he played just one season in the first team before moving to Real Madrid in 2011. His time in the Spanish capital was nothing short of spectacular. In 10 years at the Bernabéu, he collected 18 trophies, including three La Liga titles and four Champions League triumphs. His composure, leadership and ability to perform in the most important moments made him one of the best central defenders of his generation.

In the summer of 2021, Varane joined Manchester United for an initial £34 million. Despite struggling with injury problems during his time at Old Trafford, he made 95 appearances for the club and added a Carabao Cup to his long list of accolades. His final game for United was a victorious FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley, which provided a fitting end to his time in England.

International success and Varane’s legacy

On the international stage, Varane has earned 93 caps for France, making his debut in 2013. He played a crucial role in France’s victory at the 2018 World Cup and also helped the country win the 2021 Nations League. His international career ended on a high after reaching the World Cup final again in 2022.

Looking back on his career, Varane said: “I have fallen and got up a thousand times and this time it is time to stop and hang up my boots.” His departure leaves a lasting impression as one of the best defenders of modern times.

A new chapter begins

Although Varane’s playing career is over, he is entering a new chapter off the pitch. He will remain at Como, albeit without his boots and shin pads. His decision to move into a non-playing role allows him to remain connected to the sport while focusing on his long-term health.

Earlier this year, Varane spoke openly about the physical impact of football, particularly heading and playing with a concussion, and is campaigning for more awareness and protection for players who face similar issues.

With no regrets, Varane leaves the field full of pride, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of success, integrity and leadership.
