Joey Badass named Artist in Residence at NYU Clive Davis

The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts has announced its Artist in Residence for fall 2024: artist/actor/social activist and Brooklyn native Joey Bada$$.

According to the announcement, Bada$$ is one of the youngest holders of the position at 29 years old. He will be the first AIR to have multiple exposures to the disciplines of art and education during his residency: he will lead master classes, lectures, conversations and Q&A sessions on music creation, songwriting, the business of music publishing, film and television, and social impact.

“I am honored and humbled to have been invited to be an artist-in-residence at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute,” he says. “I look forward to sharing my experiences and knowledge with the students and am sure I will learn a lot from them as well. I am committed to building a cross-industry community and this is another beautiful step on that path.”

“We are thrilled to have Joey join us,” says Nicholas Sansano, Chair of the Clive Davis Institute. “In our opinion, the current economic model of the music industry does not allow creatives to pursue a single activity as their sole source of income and sustained relevance. Joey, the multifaceted artist, songwriter, actor and social activist, can bring this all-too-real message to our students with first-hand credibility. Of equal or perhaps even greater importance is his commitment to the mentorship and holistic well-being of young aspiring professionals. He is a relatively young artist who is already making a lasting impact by foregrounding a very concrete commitment to the common good – actions and messages that our students need to see and hear.”

Bada$$ was the founder of hip-hop collectives Pro Era and Beast Coast, star of the 2021 Oscar-winning Netflix short film “Two Distant Strangers,” and is currently producing Season 5 of “Power Book III: Raising Kanan,” which premieres this winter on the Starz network. He was recently honored as the winner of the Generaciones Tequila Impact Award at the 2024 Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players Event for founding ImpactMENtorship, a program that provides free mentoring for men of color. The program is entering its second year and includes artist Denzel Curry, NFL player Stefon Diggs, and KidSuper designer Colm Dillane. Applications are open through the end of September.

Previous artist residencies have included Pharrell Williams, Dawn Richard, Corinne Bailey Rae, Swizz Beatz and Jack Antonoff.

Bada$$ recently released his new single and visual “Tell Me” featuring Chlöe on Columbia Records.
