Where to find free sandbags ahead of Hurricane Helene

News4JAX will update this list as we learn more from our counties about free sandbag locations.

The system in the Gulf is expected to develop into a tropical storm later Tuesday and then rapidly intensify as it moves north through the Gulf of Mexico.

Its current track suggests it will develop into a major hurricane before making landfall in the Florida Panhandle, likely sometime Thursday.

Duval County

The county is not offering free sandbags, but a local business has enlisted its help for Jacksonville residents.

Residents can visit Woerner Turf & Landscaping Supply at 8900 Philips Highway on Tuesday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to pick up the sandbags.

You don’t need to bring shovels. All materials for filling the bags are available on site.

St. Johns County

St. Johns County will provide free sandbags, weather permitting, at the following six locations on Tuesday from noon to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

  • Windswept Acres Park – 5335 SR A1A South, St. Augustine

  • Solomon Calhoun Center – 1300 Duval Street, St. Augustine

  • St. Johns County Equestrian Center – 8200 Smith Road, Hastings

  • Millfield – 1805 Racetrack Road, St. Augustine

  • North Beach Park – 3721 Coastal Highway, Vilano Beach

  • Palm Valley Bridge – East side of the Intracoastal Waterway

Sand and bags are provided free of charge. Visitors must provide their own transportation and shovels and are responsible for filling their own bags.

Each person is allowed to take a maximum of 20 bags. A sandbag usually weighs about 13 to 18 kilograms.
