After the Jacksonville Jaguars’ disastrous 47-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday night, head coach Doug Pederson could only state the obvious.
“That’s where we are right now, and we’re not a very good football team,” Pederson told reporters. “We’ve got to fix that. We’ve got to come up with answers and we’ve got to come up with answers fast.”
The Jaguars needed to win on Monday night to avoid a 3-0 hole. They lost in embarrassing fashion. The offense was weak to say the least, scoring just three points in the first half. Offensive coordinator Press Taylor’s goal of playing a fast-paced offense with urgency and longer drives?
Gone. It even looked like the Jaguars had taken a step backwards. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence was absent for much of the evening and made a lot of bad passes. Lots of mistakes and mishaps. The running game didn’t get going. Communication, a focus throughout the week, was lacking.
The already battered defense was hurt even more. The Bills scored on every attack until there were only 12 minutes left in the game and they were finally forced to punt. Pederson’s team was behind early and things only got worse. Pederson spoke out about the team’s lack of response and lack of confidence to do so.
“I mean, it’s usually human nature when you go down that fast,” Pederson said. “Now you wait for something to happen. You know, this is a difficult situation. We have to be on the other side. We have to make sure things happen sooner rather than later.”
The Jaguars finished the game with 239 total yards. They completed 2 of 13 third-down conversions. They lost the ball twice. Pederson said he would have to watch the video and plan his next steps.
“Well, I don’t necessarily think you go in the opposite direction,” Pederson said. “They’ve put a lot of time into it. But there have to be changes, whether it’s game design, personnel, everything is on the table, let’s put it that way, right? Those are all things we have to look at, we have to look at as a personnel, and make adjustments.”
These adjustments must happen quickly. The Jaguars are in danger of slipping to 0-4 next week when they play a playoff team like the Houston Texans.
