Joe Vick is a valuable role player for the VU basketball team

When he became a Division I basketball player at Valparaiso University, Vick realized that there was an electric atmosphere at every game, not just the big ones.

“We played at Ole Miss my freshman year, and even though I haven’t really gotten into the game, it’s still a pretty meaningful experience,” said Vick, a junior. “A state championship game is just like a regular game in college.”

Vick has become a role player for the Beacons over the past two seasons, and even though he knows he won’t get much playing time, he continues to pitch in and help where he can, whenever he’s needed.

Vick was a walk-on under former head coach Matt Lottich in 2022. When Roger Powell took over the program in 2023, Vick wasn’t sure if his name would remain on the roster.

After getting to know Powell and his coaching staff, Vick was allowed to stay on the team. The 6’1″ forward grabbed two rebounds in five games last season.

Vick said he hopes he gets a chance to try his luck and score points this season.

“I’ve spent a lot of time shooting in the offseason,” he said. “I’m trying to get in there and hit shots.”

Although it can be difficult at times to stay focused when he knows he may not play, Vick said his main goal is to keep his teammates happy. Attending weekly Bible study with some of the players has also allowed Vick to relax off the court.

Isaiah Shaw, of Grand Canyon, and Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro, of Western Michigan, introduced the Bible study last summer. Attending weekly has helped Vick grow closer to that faith—a big reason he originally chose VU.

“It was a really big thing in my life,” Vick said of his Christianity and faith. “Knowing that you have a place to go to recover from basketball – knowing that you have a brother by your side that you could be vulnerable with, that’s important for all of us.”

Because basketball can be very taxing on an athlete’s body, both mentally and physically, Vick hopes the small group can eventually bring the entire team together to discuss their beliefs.

“I have to give credit to others, the reason I’m here is not because of me,” Vick said. “I have to give credit to God and my family for everything they’ve done for me and to Coach Powell for giving me a chance.”

After a 7-25 mark last season, Powell is confident his team can bounce back and have more success this year. Valpo’s season-opening home game is Wednesday, October 30th at 7 p.m. against Saint Mary of the Woods.
