Virat Kohli’s weakness exposed by three-Test veteran Bangladeshi pacer; Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill remain baffled

The Indian team’s return to Test cricket got off to a rocky start as they faced a top-order collapse on the opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai. Forced to bat on an unusually pace-friendly surface at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, India struggled to cope with the skilful bowling of 24-year-old Hasan Mahmud.

The young Bangladeshi pacer, playing only his fourth Test, dismantled India’s famous top order and claimed the coveted scalps of captain Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli in the first over.

Under overcast skies, Mahmud made life difficult for the Indian batsmen by taking advantage of the movement that was available. While Taskin Ahmed, Bangladesh’s most experienced pacer, offered Rohit Sharma plenty of space outside the off-stump, Mahmud stuck to a disciplined approach, consistently targeting the off-stump line and forcing the Indian captain to make mistakes.

Mahmud’s persistence paid off in the sixth over when he tricked Rohit into a cautious poke, caught the outside edge and allowed Najmul Hossain Shanto to take a sharp catch at slip. Rohit’s dismissal for 6 was the first blow for India.

Shubman Gill’s woes continued as he left the field without scoring a point, adding to India’s woes. The young opener, who had joined the Test team after leading India A in the Duleep Trophy, fell victim to a leg pass from Mahmud.

Gill attempted to flick the ball to fine leg, but misjudged the timing and edged it to wicket-keeper Litton Das, who caught the ball athletically.

Virat Kohli’s failure

Virat Kohli, who returned to the Indian Test team for the first time since 2023, began his innings with some powerful shots, apparently with an intention to attack the opposition. He played some elegant shots on the leg side, including his trademark flick, signalling his intention to impose himself on the bowlers.

However, Kohli’s well-known problems with off-stump deliveries took their toll. Mahmud remained disciplined and tricked Kohli into a cover drive, and the Indian star played the ball to Litton Das, causing India even more problems.

With three key batsmen back in the pavilion before lunch, India remain in trouble. Bangladesh, on the other hand, picked up where they left off in Pakistan, sweeping the hosts 2-0 in a historic Test series win.
