ForbesToday’s “Wordle” No. 1186: Hints, tips and answers for Tuesday, September 17th

It’s Wordle Wednesday, which means I have a special puzzle for all you puzzle lovers. Every Wednesday I add a riddle, brain teaser or logic puzzle to my Wordle guide to keep things interesting. This is important in any relationship, even between writers and readers – although we won’t get into Fifty Shades Of Wordle here.

Okay, here is today’s puzzle:

“I belong to all things and people, and yet I am avoided and despised by some. Caress me and stare at me until you go mad, but no blow can harm me, no pain can cause me. Children enjoy me, the old are afraid.

Beautiful girls rejoice and spin. Cry and I cry, yawn and I sleep. Smile and I will grin too. What am I?”

This is actually from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, one of the best modern RPG video games. I will post the answer tomorrow.

Okay, Wordle time!

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot. right here.

I started with a Wordle Bot favorite, SLATE, which was OK but only got me one yellow box. I tried all the new letters with ROUGH and got another yellow box. At this point, although I didn’t know it yet, I only had 11 remaining possible solutions. I chose FUNKY because I thought it was unlikely that an “I” would appear in the Wordle, but very easily a “Y” (I could think of several words that end in “Y” like BULLY and FUNKY). I figured since I already knew the “L” would appear in it, I would rule out more letters and that ended up being a stroke of luck. FULLY was the Wordle and the only remaining possible solution. Pretty wicked Wordle!

Competitive Wordle Score

Total failure. 0 points for guessing in four sets and 0 for the draw with the bot.

How to play competitive Wordle

  • If you get a 1, guessing is worth 3 points, if you get a 2, guessing is worth 2 points, if you get a 3, guessing is worth 1 point, if you get a 4, guessing is worth 0 points, if you get a 5, guessing is worth -1 point, if you get a 6, guessing is worth -2 points and missing the Wordle is worth -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent, you get 1 point. If you draw, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add these points together to get your score. Keep a daily score or just play for a new score every day.
  • On Fridays you get 2XP, which means you double your points – positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running record or just play day by day. Have fun!

Today’s Wordle etymology

The word full comes from the Old English term fullwhich means “whole” or “complete”. It is derived from fullwhich comes from Proto-Germanic Subscribewhich means “full”, and the adverbial suffix -lywhich indicates the manner or degree. The combination of these elements indicates the meaning of something done completely or to the fullest extent.
