The Bally Sports Detroit app is dark for many during part of the Tigers game

With the Tigers playing perhaps their most anticipated game in nearly a decade, many fans sat in the dark for most of the first four innings Tuesday night.

When the Tigers, 1.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins, played the Kansas City Royals for the final wild-card spot in the American League, the Bally Sports Plus app was unavailable to many customers in the Michigan market and other markets across the country.

A manager at Bally Sports Detroit said around 8 p.m. Tuesday, about 20 minutes after first pitch, that the operations department was aware of the situation and was working to fix it. Service was restored about an hour after the Tigers-Royals game began, Bally Sports told customers on social media.

“Bally Sports is currently experiencing a streaming outage on multiple platforms,” said a message from Bally Sports’ X account (formerly Twitter) around 8:17 a.m. Thursday. “We know every moment counts. The Bally Sports operations team is working quickly to identify and resolve the issue.”

When some fans tried to load the TV stream of the game, they received the following error message: “There was a problem playing your video. Please try again or contact customer support.”

At around 8:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Bally Sports said On-X service had been restored “in all regions.” Bally Sports said customers who continue to experience issues can contact support at help.ballysports.com.

Many Tigers fans began subscribing to the Bally Sports Plus app (for more than $20 a month) earlier this season when negotiations between Diamond Sports, the parent company of Bally Sports’ regional sports networks, and Comcast, the parent company of Xfinity, reached an impasse and the RSNs were removed from Xfinity’s lineup on May 1.

Diamond Sports and Xfinity have reached an agreement and the Bally Sports RSNs will return to the cable giant’s schedule on August 1.

Including Tuesday night’s game in Kansas City, the Tigers have 11 games left in the regular season as they try to make the postseason for the first time since 2016. The Twins played the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians.

The Tigers bounced back from a 7-6 win over the Royals on Monday to move within 1.5 games of the Twins, who had an early lead over the Guardians but ultimately lost 4-3.
