FX’s “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” premieres Tuesday, September 17.
Ryan Murphy’s series, itself a spin-off of his popular “American Horror Story” series, “once again explores a significant event involving a sports personality.” Season 1 of the show “follows the story of Aaron Hernandez, former New England Patriots player and convicted murderer,” the show’s logline states.
Josh Rivera plays the controversial sports figure who was a star tight end for the Patriots but was later convicted of murder. During the 2013 offseason, Hernandez was arrested and charged with the murder of a man who was dating his fiancée’s sister. Hernandez was found guilty of premeditated murder in 2015 and sentenced to life in prison. He was also charged with a double murder in 2012 but was acquitted in 2017. Days after his acquittal, he committed suicide in his prison cell and was later diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
The series also profiles several major sports personalities who have played with and coached Hernandez, including Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Bill Belicheck, Urban Meyer and others.
Murphy, Stu Zicherman, Brad Falchuk, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Hernan Lopez, Marshall Lewy, Linda Pizutti Henry and Ira Napoliello will serve as executive producers of the sports anthology series.
