UPDATE
Apple Maps offers new ways to explore the world
Starting today, users can discover hikes in U.S. national parks, create custom hiking routes, save favorite spots in a new Places library, and more.
With today’s release of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and watchOS 11, Apple Maps is introducing new features to help users explore and find their favorite places.
“Apple Maps is the best way to explore and navigate the world, and we’re excited to make that experience even better for our users with today’s updates,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services. “Maps makes it easy and enjoyable to plan any trip, with beautiful, detailed and useful features that only Apple can offer.”
Detailed national park hikes and topographic maps
Users can browse thousands of hikes in U.S. national parks on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch, from Acadia National Park in Maine to Yosemite National Park in California to Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska. To find the perfect trail, users can filter hikes by route type, length, and elevation, and follow turn-by-turn navigation to stay on track. Users can download hikes to use offline and save them to their Apple Watch. Starting today, Maps also shows shuttle schedules for select national parks, including Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah and Sequoia National Park in California.
Topographic maps for the United States and Japan are also available on iPhone and Apple Watch, offering impressive detail such as contour lines, trail details, and more.
Individual hiking routes
For the first time, Maps users can create and save custom hiking and walking routes in countries and territories around the world. Users can customize routes to suit their personal preferences, whether it’s a long walk through a new city or a hike in a nearby nature reserve. As with hikes in national parks, custom routes can be accessed even without cellular or Wi-Fi reception when synced with Apple Watch.
Completely new places library and improved search experience
Now it’s easier than ever for users to keep track of their favorite places and discover amazing new ones. On iPhone, iPad, and Mac, users can save places, curated map guides, national park hikes, and custom routes in a brand new Places Library and add personal notes to each location.
The improved search experience also lets users quickly discover and compare places by browsing photos, reviews, price levels, and more without leaving the search. The updated “Search Here” button in Maps lets users search for places of interest, such as restaurants, cafes, and gas stations, in a specific area.
