Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley star in Killer Heat trailer (exclusive)

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley team up to investigate a murder in Greece.

PEOPLE has the exclusive first trailer for Amazon MGM Studios’ Killer heat with Gordon-Levitt, 43, as private investigator Nick Bali, who works on the Greek island of Crete. He is hired to investigate the accidental death of a young man from a wealthy family on the island.

Richard Madden plays both victim Leo Vardakis and his identical twin Elias, while 32-year-old Woodley is Elias’ wife, who suspects that someone in the Vardakis family is plotting to murder one of the twins.

As Detective Bali begins his investigation, he discovers that the wealthy family controls much of what happens on the island. He also has to deal with his own difficult past and estranged family.

“There’s a part of me, and I think there’s a part of us, that just loves reading a good crime novel,” Gordon-Levitt tells PEOPLE about the film and the short story it’s based on, Jo Nesbø’s The jealous man.

He, Woodley and Madden, 38, shot much of the film on location in Crete, and Gordon-Levitt recalls that making the movie satisfied his lifelong desire to travel for his work.

“I just consider it such a privilege. I feel so lucky,” he says. “I got to visit a lot of different places and there are very, very few places more beautiful than the island of Crete. I had never been to Greece before I got to make this film and it’s a cliche – the beauty of Greece – but it’s a cliche for a reason. It’s damn beautiful!”

The film marks a reunion for Gordon-Levitt and Woodley, who last appeared in 2016 in SnowdenGordon-Levitt says he and Woodley hadn’t spoken for a few years, but they “immediately went back to all the intimacy and friendship that we had in the past.”

“That’s how you know you’re dealing with a really good friend, and that’s what happened with Shae,” he adds. “I was like, ‘Hey, do you want to go to Greece?’ I’m so glad it worked out.”

“I think if you’re like me and you’re drawn to some exciting characters and beautiful locations, Shea and Richard are both so good at the setting of the island of Crete that you really couldn’t ask for a more beautiful place in the world,” says Gordon-Levitt. “If you just want to be swept away by a mood, I think you’ll enjoy this film.”

Killer heat will stream worldwide on Prime Video on September 26th.
