Harris claims Trump’s abortion program makes “no exceptions,” shortly after Trump claims the opposite: “Absolute lie”

Vice President Kamala Harris claimed that former President Trump would enact a nationwide abortion ban that would allow no exceptions, even though Trump had recently stated that he was in favor of abortion exceptions.

“Now there are Trump abortion bans in over 20 states that make it a crime for a doctor or nurse to provide medical care in a state. That means life in prison. Trump abortion bans that make no exceptions, not even for rape and incest, and that understand what that means,” Harris said Tuesday evening at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

“A survivor of a crime of physical harm does not have the right to decide what happens to her body. That is immoral, and one does not have to abandon one’s faith or deeply held beliefs to agree that the government and Donald Trump certainly should not be telling a woman what to do with her body.

“You see, if Donald Trump were re-elected, he would sign the national abortion ban.”

Shortly before, Trump – like former President Reagan – had declared that he was in favor of exceptions to abortion.

“I believe in the exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother,” Trump said during the debate. “I believe in that very strongly. Ronald Reagan did too. Eighty-five percent of Republicans knew that exceptions are very important,” he said.

Trump added in his response that he does not support a national ban on abortion and that Harris’ comments were an “absolute lie.”

“As for the abortion ban, no, I am not for an abortion ban, but that doesn’t matter because that issue has now been taken over by the states,” Trump said.

Earlier this year, Trump faced criticism from some conservative pro-lifers for Republicans’ more dovish stance on abortion this election cycle, saying last month that Florida’s six-week abortion ban was “too short.” He has since said he would vote against a Florida amendment that would legalize abortions up to the ninth month of pregnancy, reiterating that abortion laws and issues should be left to the states to decide.
