A limited edition Shirley Temple 7UP flavor is in the works for the holidays.

Food and snack insider Snackolater posted on Instagram on Tuesday that the lemon, lime, pomegranate and cherry-flavored soda could be available in cans and 2-liter bottles in late October.

On Thursday, Shirley Temple flavors in regular and sugar-free varieties could be found on Walmart and Target’s websites, but were listed as sold out or unavailable for purchase.

The flavor is not listed on the 7UP website as of Thursday.

On Thursday, recent comments on 7Up’s official Instagram account included questions about the new flavor such as “Will Shirley Temple be available in diet/zero sugar form?” Please say yes” and “We need Shirley Temple Neow in the can.”

History of the Shirley Temple

People know Shirley Temple for her beloved, innocent roles in films. But she is also known for the non-alcoholic drink named after her.

It is said that in the late 1930s, a bartender at Chasen’s in Beverly Hills invented the cocktail. The bartender prepared the drink for the young actress at her peak.

Paired with grenadine and ginger ale or lemon-lime soda, the drink is topped off with a maraschino cherry.

The sweet preparation later became a fun drink that children and adults alike crave.

There are also variations at Shirley Temple, including the Roy Rogers – named after the famous movie cowboy – which replaces Coke with lemon-lime soda.

Want to build a Shirley Temple at home?

The drink can be easily made at home if you can’t find Shirley Temple 7UP at your local store. Here is Shirley Temple’s recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 3 ounces lemon-lime soda or ginger ale
  • A dash of grenadine
  • Ice cubes at your discretion
  • Maraschino cherry for garnish

Add lemon-lime soda and ginger ale to a glass with ice cubes. Then add a dash of grenadine. Finally, stir your soft drink and top it off with a cherry.

What is the story of 7UP?

According to a 1978 New York Times article, soda first appeared in 1929 as a headache reliever. The company was founded by Charles Leiper Grigg, Edmund Ridgeway and Frank Y. Gladney.

According to the article, Grigg and Ridgeway purchased a bottling plant and began selling lemon and lime soda two weeks before the stock market crash in 1929. Gladney, a lawyer, joined the company soon after. Grigg, who initially operated a general store in Prices Branch, Missouri, invented the name Seven-Up.

After changing ownership over the years, the brand is now owned by Keurig Dr. Pepper.

How popular is 7Up?

A new soda could help 7UP shake things up. In 2024, it was ranked number 17 in Brand Finance’s list of the top 50 soft drink brands. In 2023, 7Up ranked 12th.

Brand Finance has been creating a directory of brand assets and company profiles since 2008, which is updated annually.

According to Brand Finance, Coca-Cola is the top soft drink in 2024. Pepsi is at number 2 and Red Bull is at number 3. All had the same rankings in 2023.
