STATEN ISLAND, NY – A vehicle struck several businesses at the Manor Road Shopping Center in Castleton Corners Friday afternoon.
The NYPD told Advance/SILive.com that a 70-year-old woman was driving a blue sedan when she “lost control” at 754 Manor Road around 2:33 p.m. and collided with several commercial buildings.
The driver was subsequently taken to Richmond University Medical Center in stable condition, according to an NYPD spokesman. No other injuries were reported.
There is no suspicion of a crime, the spokesman added.
Emergency workers on site blocked numerous entrances to the mall while passersby gathered to catch a glimpse of the aftermath.
The entrance to the SuperFresh grocery store in the shopping mall appeared to be significantly damaged. Broken glass and debris from a brick wall were scattered in front of the store entrance, which was cordoned off by police.
A few meters away from the defaced facade was a damaged Hyundai. The front of the car was littered with broken glass and the bumper was missing. The driver’s door could also be seen leaning against bollards that lined the sidewalk in front of the store’s entrance.
Todt Hill Wine and Liquors was closed to the public and the store’s exterior also suffered significant damage.
Across the parking lot, the wall of a Chase Bank had collapsed, revealing what looked like cinder blocks.
This is a breaking news story. More details will be added as they become available.
