Like many others, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was surprised to learn of the New York Jets’ decision to fire head coach Robert Saleh. The move Saleh is also said to have surprised himas he was optimistic about turning things around with what he thought was a talented Jets roster.

“I texted him, but I couldn’t talk to him,” Shanahan told reporters Tuesday. “Yeah, I was pretty shocked. That’s intimidating, especially when they’re fighting for first place in the division this week. And I think they’re at the top of their game on defense and have a pretty good team and a chance to have one. “Hell of a year.” So that was quite surprising.

Some have speculated whether the 49ers might consider bringing Saleh back in some capacity to help their struggling defense. However, Shanahan expressed confidence in first-year defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen.

“I think Nick is doing a really good job,” Shanahan confirmed. “I was impressed with him from the start. I like how he handles the defensive team every week, how they run practice, and I like his game plans and I like how he calls it.” So, I’ve been very happy with Nick so far.

As for Saleh, a report from Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle indicated that he plans to take some time off, spend time with his family and prepare for the next recruiting cycle, where he will likely be in high demand as defensive coordinator will be.

Silver added: “He has no plans to join anyone’s team during the 2024 season should an opportunity arise.”

Of course, fans have to wonder what could happen after the season if Sorensen’s defense continues to struggle.
