21-year-old climber dies of “serious injuries” after falling from Devil’s Tower

A 21-year-old climber has died after “suffering serious injuries” while climbing Devil’s Tower National Monument in Wyoming, authorities said.

The fall occurred just before 8 p.m. Sunday when Devils Tower police were notified that rock climber Stewart Phillip Porter, 21, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, fell while rappelling down the second pitch of El Cracko, sustaining “serious injuries,” according to a statement released Monday by the National Park Service.

“Porter’s partner became stranded and was later rescued from the face of the tower with the assistance of Devils Tower Lodge climbing guides and Buck Wild climbing guides,” officials said.

According to the National Park Service, there have only been seven climbing deaths in the tower’s more than 100-year history.

“Although climbing Devils Tower rarely results in fatalities, it is still dangerous,” park officials said.

The National Park Service took the opportunity to remind the public about proper safety precautions when climbing.

“Before climbing, check the local weather report and be aware of changing weather conditions,” officials said. “Be aware of animals (the tower is home to stinging insects, birds, rodents and reptiles)… (and) consult multiple sources for information on a route, as recommended equipment varies across guidebooks.”

“Most climbing accidents and fatalities on the tower occur during rappelling. The National Park Service does not maintain anchors – check all anchors and secure them as needed. Make sure you know the location of your rappel route before you begin,” officials said. “Begin rappelling above the top of the pillars to prevent ropes from getting caught in cracks. Avoid throwing loose rocks at climbers below. Many rappels require two ropes; know the distance of your planned rappel before you begin.”

Devils Tower thanked Devils Tower Lodge, Buck Wild Climbing Guides, Hulett EMS and Crook County Sheriff’s Office, as well as monument staff for their assistance in the search and recovery efforts and expressed condolences to the family, park officials said.
