20 companies with the happiest and most satisfied employees

H&R Block can now claim to offer the most pleasant and stress-free workplace around.

According to Indeed and Oxford University’s Wellbeing Research Centre’s 2024 Work Wellbeing 100 list, the tax consultancy firm ranked number 1 in employee wellbeing.

The index ranks the 100 largest publicly traded U.S. companies whose employees reported high levels of satisfaction, purpose and low stress when they took a survey and gave a review of their employer on Indeed. And those high scores could lead to better business performance.

Indeed’s rankings found that companies with higher job satisfaction scores also have higher valuations, returns on capital and profits. Together, the companies on the list outperform stock market indexes such as the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite, the report said.

The most frequently represented industries on the list were retail (23 times) and transportation (14 times).

“Many of these companies tend to value flexible work hours,” says Kyle MK, talent strategy consultant at Indeed. These policies allow employees to choose where, how and when they work. “They have the option to go to doctor’s appointments or soccer games, or work from home if that’s easier for them.”

At a time when major companies are changing their policies and pushing employees to come into the office up to five days a week, Indeed’s report suggests that companies that forgo stricter regulations are finding favor with new hires.

“Companies that offer choice tend to enjoy a much better reputation among their employees,” says MK.

Frontrunner H&R Block operates a hybrid workplace: 42% of the company’s employees work from home full time, the company’s chief human resources officer recently told Human Resource Executive.

These are the top 20 employers on the list:

  1. H&R Block
  2. Delta Air Lines
  3. L3Harris
  4. Accenture
  5. Nike
  6. Craftsmen International
  7. Disney Parks, Experiences and Products
  8. Addus HomeCare
  9. IBM
  10. Amazon Flex
  11. Apple
  12. The Walt Disney Company

  14. Maximus
  15. Transporters
  16. Cognizant Technology Solutions
  17. Google
  18. Dutch Bros Coffee
  19. Microsoft
  20. FedEx Freight

According to MK, the majority of job seekers want to work for companies that care about their feelings in the workplace. Indeed’s list highlights the companies they may want to consider in their job search.

“While workplace wellbeing has faced challenges in recent years, it’s more important than ever for companies to create environments where employees can truly thrive,” said LaFawn Davis, chief people and sustainability officer at Indeed, in a statement. “By prioritizing workplace wellbeing, companies develop a more resilient, effective and satisfied workforce, which ultimately drives business growth.”

MK encourages candidates to consider their values when deciding where to work, adding that this will help them find companies that match their “intrinsic motivations” and where they can perform well.

“We believe that everyone has the right to succeed at work and deserves a workplace where they are supported,” he says.
