10 New Movies and Series to Watch on Netflix, Max, and More This Weekend (October 4-6)

Spooky season is in full swing and among the new shows and movies you can watch this weekend you’ll find several horror titles and thrillers NetflixMax and other top Streaming services.

The weekend watch list is dominated by films, including the latest Marvel blockbuster “Deadpool and Wolverine.” It’s now streaming on premium video-on-demand, so you can watch Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman banter and gory action from the comfort of your cozy sofa. Plus, Netflix’s sequel The Platform 2 is here to make you glad you don’t have to fight for your food every day.

On TV, LGBTQ teen romantic comedy “Heartstopper” returns, while HBO unveils its latest show, Hollywood satire “The Franchise.” Here’s our guide to what to watch this weekend. And be sure to check out Netflix’s new mind-bending thriller that just dropped.

Let’s get to it…maybe? So far, the gay teen romance between Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) has been limited to hot and heavy make-out sessions. But they’re growing up and their relationship is deepening, so they might be willing to talk about SEX. Charlie wants to tell Nick he loves him, while Nick also has something important to confess in return. Meanwhile, Elle (Yasmin Finney) and her boyfriend Tao (William Gao) navigate trans intimacy. And for all of them, the start of the school year means thinking about study planning.

The third season of the adult animated fantasy series based on a live-streamed Dungeons & Dragons campaign returns with more dragons, fantastic battles and raunchy jokes. The story picks up from the huge cliffhanger at the end of the second season, in which the lovable band of misfits forms a surprising alliance and the ominous bombshell of soon-to-hatch dragon eggs explodes. The Chroma Conclave’s campaign of destruction continues as the Ash King hunts down Vox Machina. The Outsiders must battle demons within and without to save their loved ones, the Tal’Dorei Republic, and all of Exandria.

The fantastic first season of Love Is Blind UK has just ended, and (loudly) the dating reality show is returning to the US to continue the “experiment” in which singles from Washington, DC meet in… meet the audio-connected pods and get engaged unseen and test whether love is truly blind. Although the cast is from the Capitol area, there are no politicians involved, but there is a first: two sisters are taking part at the same time.

“Velma: This Halloween has to be special!” (Max)

This “Velma” Halloween special continues the storyline from the season two finale, in which Velma (voiced by Mindy Kaling) died and her spirit inhabited Scrappy’s body. With only 24 hours to bring Velma back, the gang must find a dark spellbook – all while avoiding the wrath of a vengeful spirit. As the annual Sexy Halloween Party approaches, Velma and her friends must face their greatest fears if they all want to make it out alive.

The Merc with a Mouth is back, this time with a sharp-clawed enemy in tow. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have made much of their jokey, real-life friendship/rivalry, which is now presented on screen. If you thought Jackman’s Wolverine died in 2017’s Logan, he did. The one shown here is a variant, a term you’ll know if you’ve seen “Loki.” Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, has kept a low profile after being rejected by the Avengers. The Time Variance Authority (TVA) asks him to carry out a mission. But when Wade realizes his own timeline is falling apart, he rebels and travels across the multiverse in search of a version of Logan, aka Wolverine, who can save everyone Wade loves.

No one was really asking for a sequel to Netflix’s 2019 dystopian thriller, but the success of the first film naturally led to a sequel. As a reminder, in a tower-style prison, inmates are moved between floors every month. The food is lowered level by level, starting from the top. Conflicts arise as the prisoners at the top can eat as much as they want while the residents on the lower levels get leftover food. In the sequel, as a mysterious leader asserts his rule in the tower, a new resident is drawn into the fray as the inmates attempt to combat the brutal food system.

This charming, bittersweet coming-of-age dramedy will give millennials all the feels. The Sundance darling comes from writer/director/producer Sean Wang in his directorial debut, inspired by his own experiences growing up in the Bay Area. In the summer of 2008, 13-year-old Chris goes through the usual problems and tribulations of youth – a first crush, changing friendships, new interests. He fights against his loving mother (Joan Chen) and fights with his older sister Vivian (Shirley Chen). With high school approaching, Chris is still figuring out who he is and who he wants to be.

Another contemporary coming-of-age film, “We Grown Now” is set in 1992 Chicago and follows two black boys growing up in the Cabrini Green housing projects. Malik (Blake Cameron James) and Eric (Gian Knight Ramirez) are inseparable, but when another boy in their neighborhood is shot, the tragedy has a major impact on their lives. Malik’s mother Dolores (Jurnee Smollett) is frightened and considers a promotion that will move the family away from Chicago – and divide the friends.
